There ain’t
nothing I can’t do,
No sky too
high, no sea too rough, no muff too tough
Everything
worth doing is worth overdoing
Moderation
is for cowards.

– Lone Survivor
If
you are a fan of movies and have watched the infamous 2013 movie, The Lone
Ranger, then probably you will be familiar with the excerpt above. Am not going
to delve much into the movie, I will only use its excerpt above to bring my
article to life. And I would advise those that have not watched the movie to
try and watch it. Reason being: it has a lot of leadership quotes you can learn
from.
Fast
forward, my topic above. We, human beings are the most successful animals in
this planet, owing to our brain structure and the way God created us. We have
achieved tremendous goals and still have plans to achieve more. From the time
Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon to the discovery of outer space, the
invention of the internet, exploration of the deep ocean, inventory of
robotics, surgery, medicine, these amazing discoveries, I have to say that it
is overwhelming to its every detail. All these things have been achieved, not
only by our intellect as humans, but because somebody dared to dream.
There
is an infamous cliché that goes, ‘What we think, we become’ Man thought of
going to the moon, we all know what happened. Steve Jobs had his own thoughts,
today we delight in holding his dreams in our hands in the name of I phone. We
all dare to dream, some achieve their dreams, some dread even trying, either
because the dream is way too big, or the technicalities of achieving it are too
cumbersome. But success is not for the faint hearted. Man couldn’t conquer the
moon if he were faint hearted. The same rules of exchange apply in trying to
achieve our dreams.
I
pose a question, what would you do, if you were not afraid? It’s a rhetorical
question, so you can keep the answer to yourself. In becoming what we think we
are, fear is something that should not stand in our way. As it’s said, fear is
quite contagious and the moment it rents a space within your brain cells, trust
me, you are not going to do anything, not even trying to accomplish it. Our capabilities are beyond measure and it
all waters down to our belief system.
In
my perspective, I believe anyone can do anything on earth. Our limits are only
set by ourselves. A time back I was talking to my colleagues and I told them
that today if someone appoints you to be the CEO of this company given a few
weeks of training, then probably you may even run this company better than the
current CEO. Some of them looked at me as if I was drunk despite the fact that
I was drinking a jug of milk, literally (no pun intended). I then gave a little
explanation to my utterances and they started seeing the sense as they were
nodding in affirmation. Logically it’s possible, ethically, someone may say you
need this and that, you need some experience and some qualifications and a
hullabaloo of explanations. Which may be right or wrong, it depends on
perception. But come to think of this, what if everyone was given equal
opportunities, what will the world become?
We
are where we are as the human race, basically due to the fact that our systems
have brought us to where we are. I am one person who thinks differently because
I believe we as human beings could do more. We didn’t have to wait till 1969 to
set foot on the moon. If a nuclear bomb was dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki
way back on August 6th 1945, why did they have to wait till 1969 to
land on the moon, while someone could just use the theory of nuclear physics to
come up with a high powered rocket and may be land on Mars. Anyway, I have
little knowledge of space exploration and rocket science, so I won’t argue
much. But in my thoughts, I deeply believe that if everyone was given equal
opportunities then we as humans would have gone a lot more steps further.
There
are no limits to human intelligence; we just don’t have the chance to display
them. Some of the best ideas the world has never seen are either buried 6 feet
deep or have been cremated depending on a society’s rituals and culture. Some
of the best books never written, the best songs never heard, the poems never
recited, the vehicles never invented, the movies never watched, the
architectural designs never envisioned, the aerodynamics never invented, the best
presidents never elected. All these are deep in the ground, because someone was
too afraid to try, so they died with their dreams. No wonder it’s said that the
soil is very fertile. I am for the
opinion that it’s better to die with a memory than to die with a dream.
The
dreams we have, are never our creation. They come in our minds and thoughts
from a higher being and as a staunch Christian; I believe they come from God.
He puts them in our minds because he trusts that we can achieve them. Dying
with them would be a great offense to him. We just need to identify what was
put in us and exploit it. If man can dig deep into the ground to discover
diamonds, why can’t they dig into their minds to discover their dreams? Which
is easier, digging a hundred kilometres into the ground to mine gold or digging
ten centimetres into your mind to discover ‘diamonds’?
Your
abilities are never limited and as my sister Lupita Nyong’o in her acceptance
speech as an Oscar award winner, “No matter where you come from, your dreams
are valid” Just fall into the sphere of the infinite realm and discover your
purpose on earth. As Mark Twain puts it, there are two most important days in a
man’s life, the day you are born, and the day you find out why, so I pause the
question, why were you born?
